Grants and Awards
Stipend Information for Fellowships and Studentships
The Trustees of the Foundation have approved changes to the stipends, research allowance and incentive awards for full-time AHFMR students and fellows. Please note that all the changes outlined below will be effective July 1, 2001 and will apply to all new awards and to the existing awards upon renewal.
Full-time Students: The stipend will increase from the current value of $19,000 per annum to $20,000 per annum.
The research allowance for full-time students will also be increased from $1,000 per year to $1500 annually.
Full-time Fellows: The AHFMR Fellowship Scale will be modified as follows. The level of existing post-doctoral experience of the awardee at the time of implementation of the initial award will be used to determine the stipend level for that person. This stipend level will then remain constant during the entire tenure of the award.
For any candidate with a doctoral degree (M.D., Ph.D., D.V.M.) and less than 3 full years' experience at the time of implementation of their award, the stipend will be $35,000 per annum. For candidates with a doctorate and 3 to 5 years' experience at the time of implementation of their award, the stipend level will be $40,000 per year. For the candidate with an M.D. and between 5 and 7 years' post-doctoral experience, the stipend will be set at $45,000 per year.
Candidates who hold AHFMR fellowships outside of Canada will still receive an additional $2,500 per year on their stipend.
The research allowances for all fellowships will be set at $3000 annually. This represents no change for the clinical fellowships, but an increase of $1,000 per year for the full-time fellowships.
Supplemental Income: Students and Fellows may receive up to 40% of the value of their AHFMR awards from any single external agency. Supplemental income is NOT additive; as long as the value of any single award does not exceed 40% of their AHFMR awards, students, fellows and clinical fellows may receive an unlimited number of awards. However, trainees must still ensure that no more than 200 hours per year are committed to non-research activities.
AHFMR Incentive Award: This AHFMR program awards students, fellows and clinical fellows a stipend supplement. If a trainee in any of the three categories receives another major, peer-reviewed award along with an AHFMR award, he/she may be eligible to receive either: a) 30% of the value of the outside award OR b) the maximum percentage allowable by the other agency OR c) $7,000, whichever is the least. The trainee will also receive the AHFMR allowance ($1,500 for studentships, $3,000 for fellowships).
Individuals who receive an AHFMR traineeship in the form of an Incentive Award should note that this uses up their eligibility for support. Candidates have the option of canceling their AHFMR awards in order to accept awards from another source. In such cases, AHFMR may accept an application for the same type of award at a later date. Should an award by approved upon re-application, the period of support that the candidate may receive will depend on his/her eligibility, and will be up to the maximum support period allowed minus the period of support already used up.
