AHFMR Research Prize
1. Description
The AHFMR Research Prize is intended to maintain and improve AHFMR Personnel Awards as a potent vehicle for the recruitment and retention of highly qualified, internationally competitive investigators at Alberta institutions. The Prize will be made to every eligible investigator supported by AHFMR through the AHFMR Personnel Support Programs (Population Health Investigator, Clinical Investigator, Scholar, Senior Scholar, Scientist). Successful applicants for an Independent Establishment Grant are not eligible to receive the AHFMR Research Prize.
2. Eligibility To be eligible, the investigator must be currently supported by an unconditional AHFMR investigator award. Investigators receiving AHFMR Terminal support or those on Leaves of Absence are not eligible to receive the Research Prize. The Research Prize is not determined by institutional rank and salary scale. It is provided in recognition of the individual investigator's research accomplishments, and of his/her success in obtaining an AHFMR Independent Investigator award. The Research Prize is a personal prize to the recipient.
3. Relationship To Other AHFMR Programs For clinically qualified investigators currently receiving clinical income assistance, the Research Prize will replace this program, effective July 1, 2000. In those cases where the amount of the regular clinical income assistance allocated by the Foundation exceeds the amount of the Research Prize, the Foundation will provide an additional amount for an interim period to maintain prior obligations. Please note that in the past, the Clinical Income Assistance program could potentially support clinically qualified investigators for a maximum of 5 years. The Research Prize program, in contrast, carries no such limits. The investigator will receive the Prize for as long as he/she maintains an unconditional AHFMR Independent Investigator award. In the limited number of cases where AHFMR has contributed other special supplements at the request of the institution, the Research Prize will replace these supplements.
4. Value The nominal value of the AHFMR Research Prize is determined by the nature of the investigator's current AHFMR award, and by the number of awards the investigator has previously received from AHFMR. Thus, effective July 1, 2000, the Research Prize will be $10,000 per annum for AHFMR Population Health Investigators and Clinical Investigators, as well as for AHFMR Scholars for whom that award is the first AHFMR award they have received. For AHFMR Scholars who have previously held AHFMR Population Health Investigator, or Clinical Investigator awards, and for AHFMR Senior Scholars and Scientists, the prize will be $20,000 per annum. The Research Prize will be paid to the investigator through his/her sponsoring institution, and will be available throughout the term of an AHFMR award.
5. Applications No applications are required. The AHFMR Research Prize will be implemented automatically as of July 1, 2000 for all eligible investigators.
The usual reporting requirements that apply to all AHFMR Personnel Awards will also apply to the Research Prize, including the prompt submission of AHFMR Annual Reports.
7. Duration As is the Foundation's practice for all programs, the requirements for, and impact of the Research Prize program will be evaluated regularly, and will be thoroughly reviewed within five years. The decision to maintain the program at this, and subsequent reviews, will be at the sole discretion of the Foundation.
8. Responsibilities on the part of the recipients AHFMR investigators will continue to be required to acknowledge all AHFMR support in any public, private or institutional communication by calling themselves Heritage researchers and by acknowledging the support of the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research.
9. Responsibilities on the part of the Institutions The Research Prize is an award made by AHFMR, and not by the institutions. Therefore, insofar as AHFMR is concerned, the institutions are not obligated to continue the Research Prize if the researcher is not successful in obtaining further support from AHFMR. The only deductions made by the institutions on the Research Prize will be those required for tax purposes. The schedule for these deductions will be determined by the individual institutions. | ||
