Community Health Research Visiting Lecturer Award and Community Health Research Travel Grant Programs
Effective January 1, 2009, AHFMR implemented four competition deadlines per year for applicants to submit applications, depending on when the travel/visit is scheduled to take place. All applications are due at the Foundation by 4:00 p.m. on the competition deadline day. Applications will be accepted if sent by overnight courier on the deadline day.
Please note that applications must be submitted to the Community Health Research Visiting Lecturer Award or Community Health Research Travel Grant program prior to the proposed travel/visit dates.
The 2010 competition schedule is as follows:

Community Health Research Visiting Lecturer Awards
Community Health Research Visiting Lecturer Awards are intended to assist Alberta's non-profit organizations in attracting outstanding health researchers to the province.
Eligibility: This program is open to community organizations that are directly involved in health research. The University of Alberta, University of Calgary, and University of Lethbridge are not eligible to apply to this program but must submit requests to the AHFMR Visiting Lecturer Program.
Eligible visits include those that:
- are shared among health research or health care institutions in Alberta
- enable the recruitment of the visitor as a health researcher to Alberta
- relate to a pre-planned seminar series sponsored by a health research organization or Alberta Health Services
- maximize the interactions between the visitor and Alberta health research personnel
Use of funds: This program provides funds for the following purposes:
- Transportation to and from Alberta (at economy air fare rates)
- A per diem of up to $125 per day to cover accommodation, meals, and related expenses (for a maximum of 4 days)
- an honorarium of up to $150 (not applicable for recruitment visits)
- Entertainment expenses of up to $150 (to be claimed by the host)
Support from other sources: It is expected that the sponsoring organization will cover some of the costs associated with the visit.
Applications are to be submitted on current application forms by the competition deadline prior to the proposed travel/visit dates. The candidate must be nominated by an individual (i.e. the designated host) or by a research group from a non-profit organization. Candidates may NOT apply on their own behalf.

Community Health Research Travel Grants
Community Health Research Travel Grants facilitate contact among health researchers in Alberta, as well as with national and international colleagues. Candidates from a wide variety of disciplines may apply as long as the purpose of the travel is to promote community health research.
Eligibility: Individuals (independent investigators) actively engaged in health research in a non-profit organization in Alberta are eligible to apply. Please note that university faculty are not eligible to apply for these awards.
Please note that travel for the express purpose of fulfilling administrative, service delivery, or educational duties is not eligible for coverage under this program.
Eligible Visits include the following:
- Visits to other regions, organizations, or institutions within or outside Alberta for the purpose of specific research collaborations. For visits outside Alberta, a maximum of one visit per applicant per fiscal year will be considered.
- Attendance at workshops sponsored by, or held at a university, research institution, or healthcare institution in Alberta.
- Attendance at significant scientific/research conferences outside Alberta at which the applicant, or his/her trainee, is presenting an invited or refereed paper. One conference travel grant per applicant per fiscal year will be considered. Support will generally be provided for only one author for a given poster, presentation, abstract etc.
Use of Funds: Funds may be used for the following purposes:
Collaborative research:
- For visits inside Alberta, a maximum of $600 per visit may be claimed for travel and associated expenses
- For visits outside Alberta, a maximum of $1500 per visit may be claimed for travel and associated expenses
Workshops:
- Individual -- maximum of $600
- Workshop: maximum of $1800 (not exceeding $600 per individual)
Conferences:
- For conferences held in Canada -- maximum of $1500
- For conferences held outside of Canada -- maximum of $2500
Support from other sources: It is expected that the sponsoring organization will cover some of the costs associated with the travel.
