Alberta's robust health research environment attracts top health care researchers, practitioners and innovators to the province. Our leading discoveries are enhancing care and practice in areas like cardiovascular health, brain development and health, diabetes, biomedical technologies, infectious diseases, and bone and joint health.

Alberta's long-standing investment in health research excellence is set to have a greater impact than ever, through strengthened research and technology collaboration. These collaborations focus on creating new knowledge and catalyzing ground-breaking discoveries that result in new tools, processes, and technologies for improving health and well-being.

The Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research Endowment Fund, through Alberta Innovates - Health Solutions, supports top quality, internationally competitive health research. Our research seeks to further our understanding of health and disease and to produce results that will make a difference to the health, economy and societal well being of Albertans and people around the world.

Dr. Jacques Magnan

Dr. Jacques Magnan was born and raised in Québec. He received his Bachelor of Sciences in Chemistry and a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the Université de Sherbrooke. After completing post-doctoral fellowships in Aberdeen (Scotland), Toronto and Montréal, he joined the staff of the Department of Pharmacology at the Université de Montréal. His research interests were in the area of the pharmacology of peptides, notably the different groups of opioids in the Central Nervous System.

Dr. Magnan became a Scientific Officer for the Medical Research Council of Canada in Ottawa in 1990. His main area of responsibility was the organization of the peer-review process for the Groups and Program grants. In 1994, he came to Alberta to join the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research, initially as Director of Grants and Awards, then as Vice President, Programs, and now as Interim President and Chief Executive Officer.
