Heritage Youth Researcher Summer Program

2009 Competition Results

The response to the tenth offering of the Heritage Youth Researcher Summer (HYRS) Program was excellent with 173 applications from 75 schools throughout the province. We are especially grateful to all teachers who were references for the students. We truly appreciate your efforts and look forward to meeting you at the HYRS Finale or the Teachers' Workshops later on in the summer. On May 11 the HYRS adjudication committee members - comprised of 4 teachers, from St. Albert, Lethbridge, Calgary, and Edmonton, and one researcher from the University of Calgary - met to select the 42 applicants for HYRS 2009. Twenty HYRS positions are at the University of Alberta, 20 are at the University of Calgary, and two students are at the University of Lethbridge. Four criteria helped the adjudicators with their selection:

1. applicants had to have taken required math and science subjects and have achieved at least an 85% average
2. two teacher references
3. an external reference from someone in their community
4. a well thought-out essay that answered the essay questions clearly, compellingly and creatively.

The Grade 11 students will be returning to their high schools in the fall and will be on-site ambassadors for the program for other students in their school, thus fulfilling one of the main goals of the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research in developing the HYRS Program. Another guideline for the HYRS adjudication committee was to select a proportional representation of rural and urban participants to reflect the overall submissions.
